1 in 100 Adults In America Are In Prison

Just thinking about that number is staggering. The article said, "2,319,258 adults were held in U.S. prisons or jails at the start of 2008. The rate of increase for prison costs was six times greater than for higher education spending." Maybe that is part of the problem! It goes on to say, "The report said the United States is the world's incarceration leader, far ahead of more populous China with 1.5 million people behind bars. It said the U.S. also is the leader in inmates per capita (750 per 100,000 people)" Maybe if we arrested people for real crimes instead of so many drug crimes, our numbers wouldn't be so terrible. And You Thought This Flu Season Was Bad!

I looked at an interesting site from work. Part of it read, "No one knows exactly how many people died during the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic. During the 1920s, researchers estimated that 21.5 million people died as a result of the 1918-1919 pandemic. More recent estimates have estimated global mortality from the 1918-1919 pandemic at anywhere between 30 and 50 million. An estimated 675,000 Americans were among the dead."
